Not a big update, but an exciting one (for me) - the Electric Escape website now has a new design! It's been a while coming actually as the previous design (version 3) has been around since 2012. A lot changes in web design in three years, but particularly the last three where smart device design has completely changed the look of websites, and html5 has almost entirely replaced Flash.

Html5 goodness, responsive design (mobile and tablet friendly), a much-improved portfolio. I can't help but notice that many of my web design competitors don't have responsive websites, even some of the biggest. Keep up guys.

Coming soon is a full invoicing system so customers can see invoices and statements online, and a client file management system like dropbox. But that's not quite ready yet.

When it comes to directories there are literally thousands out there. Most are not worth the time, even if they are free. But I’ve rounded up some of the best, particularly for NZ websites, as they have more of a local focus. You don’t have to add your website to all of them but the more of them you submit your site to, the greater the benefit gained.

Are you listed on Google places? – if not you should be.

Google Places is a free listing on Google that if done correctly it will give you top page ranking for local searches in Google. It is however important to be set-up right to take full advantage of this free listing on Google.

By listing your business on Google Places and focusing on the right keywords you will attract local and visiting customers in your area.

What is a local search? – a local search is when someone searches online using your location as part of the search string, i.e web designers Christchurch

Research shows customers still prefer to engage with local businesses where possible and with the rise of mobile phones it should become a crucial part of your online marketing strategy while making it easier for customers to find you.

There are other online directories that your business can take advantage of boosting your local search position and opportunities, search in google for local directories or free local directories in your area. It is important to keep an eye on all your listings to make sure your information is up to date and correct.

googlehummingbird

Google has made several major changes to its search engine over the past several months. Search geeks have been debating (and complaining about) Enhanced Campaigns, the new look for mobile search results, Penguin 2.1, and several other technical updates — but the average Google user probably hasn’t noticed much of a difference. And that’s exactly what Google wants. The most recent update was announced just recently during Google’s 15th birthday celebration. Nicknamed “Hummingbird,” it represents the biggest change to Google search since 2001.

Facebook is evolving to accommodate business pages vs. individual profiles. In its latest re-design, Facebook has made a clear distinction between profiles and pages. The bottom line is profiles are now only for individuals and pages are for business. Profiles and pages have different features. In fact there are certain features which are no longer permitted for business pages but are indeed available to individual profiles.

googlepanda

Google Panda or Farmer is a change to the Google's search results ranking algorithm that was first released in February 2011. Getting ranked in Google means free traffic for web publishers, so improving and optimizing a given website for the search engines was essential. However, Google Panda is here to stay, and it has forever changed the rules of SEO.

web20

You may have heard this term before, perhaps even read something about it, but your still slightly confused about what it actually is. It does sound very generic and would probably be better suited as a different kind of internet. Perhaps a 'sequel' to the internet. You'd be forgiven for thinking this, and there seem to be a number of different theories on what Web 2.0 actually means.

Search engine optimisation is a means for getting better and higher rankings in search engine results for targeted keywords, thus ensuring better volume and quality of traffic to the website from the search engines.

Search engine optimisation entails many different methods of achieving the desired results. Many of these techniques are allowed by Search engines and are known as White Hat search engine optimisation, while others known as Black Hat SEO are discouraged and can even lead to blocking of your website. In this article, we will briefly discuss the various white hat search engine optimisation techniques while giving a short account of the black hat techniques to be avoided.
